Job Description:
The Assistant Director, Community Schools will join a team of professional staff and students to support and further the missions of the Center for Civic Engagement and Broome County Promise Zone. The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) works with communities within and beyond Binghamton University's campus to provide various rewarding and meaningful opportunities to students, faculty, staff, and community members. The CCE supports the attainment of academic, personal, and professional growth through civic engagement to develop informed, active and engaged citizens.
Broome County Promise Zone is a collaboration between Broome County Mental Health, Broome-Tioga BOCES and Binghamton University. Promise Zone's mission is \"to build a countywide system of community schools that support all children, families, and neighborhoods in pursuit of success in school, work, and life.\" Promise Zone provides school-based support, summer learning opportunities, family engagement, and community collaboration. The community schools strategy increases opportunities for children to succeed in school by adding resources known to make a difference: increased parental involvement in children's education; extra learning opportunities through educational enrichment; consistent adult guidance and support; health services.
The Center for Civic Engagement, in support of the university-wide Promise Zone Community Schools initiative, works with a number of local school districts to develop meaningful volunteer and internship opportunities and coordinate student participants. This position will strengthen the connections between the Center for Civic Engagement and Broome County Promise Zone through oversight of both school-based Promise Zone School Coordinators and Binghamton University student engagement with Promise Zone and local school districts.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support supervision of a team of Promise Zone Community School Coordinators at multiple school districts, including coordination of in-service training and development, and providing guidance and assistance as needed.
- Facilitate team meetings and oversee monthly in-service for MSW interns.
- Attend community meetings relevant to the university assisted community school model.
- Serve as the lead professional staff member for CCE's Community Schools and Youth Programs initiative, including:
+ Oversight of recruitment, placement and coordination of student volunteers, interns and service-learning participants at partner school districts.
+ Supervision of graduate and undergraduate student staff.
+ Development and documentation of processes and procedures for student recruitment and placement.
+ Coordination of transportation for student interns/volunteers.
+ Oversight of data collection and reporting, including maintaining a listing of school-based projects coordinated by other offices/departments.
+ Development of new programs and initiatives in collaboration with individual students, student groups and campus partners to identify, develop and/or implement school-based projects.
+ Other duties to enhance the university's commitment to the community schools model.
- Instruct Community Schools & Youth Programs/Promise Zone CDCI seminar for for-credit interns.
- Provide support to other CCE and Promise Zone initiatives as needed, including assistance with general outreach and promotion.
+ Completed Master's degree, or Master's degree in progress
+ 3-5 years professional experience in higher education, K-12, nonprofit sector, social services, community engagement or related field
+ Supervisory experience
+ Strong communication skills, collaborative leadership style and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
+ Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing needs/expectations from multiple stakeholders
+ Experience managing experiential learning or volunteer programs, preferably in a higher education setting
+ Understanding of K-12 school setting
